History

The Peer Visitor Training Program was established by the ACA (Amputee Coalition of America), a non-profit American organisation dedicated to the empowerment of individuals with limb loss through education, support and advocacy. It was created several years ago by a group of qualified individuals and has since proven to be a valuable and vital organisation.

In 2005, the ACA graciously agreed to implement this program in Canada. AQIPA financed the translation of documents, set up a pilot project (which included peer pairing and training), as well as a research project in the Québec City region. The results were both positive and conclusive. The ACA then signed an agreement to implement the Peer Visitor Program in Canada.
Under the terms of this agreement, the Amputee Coalition of Canada (ACC) is responsible for overseeing and upholding the integrity of the program throughout Canada.
