Call for applications

Introduction
The Franklin Fund through the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry have partnered with the Amputee Coalition of Canada to create new research funding to benefit Canada’s amputee population.
Supported Research
The Canadian Amputee Research Award will endeavor to encourage research into:
- Innovative technologies and treatment techniques for persons with limb loss
- Programs and services that advance the quality of life for persons with amputation
- Canada’s rehabilitation treatment and opportunities after amputation
- Measurement and improvement of life satisfaction and outcome following amputation
Award
The Canadian Amputee Research Award will provide up to ten thousand dollars ($10,000) for new and innovative research designed to improve the lives of amputees.
Deadline
The deadline for application is 29 February 2012.
Guidelines for Award
- Open to any Canadian resident involved in Amputee Rehabilitation research;
- Research must be focused upon one of the four tenants listed under Supported Research;
- The research must be original, novel, innovative and eligible for publication in clinical or scientific literature;
- All research proposals shall be subject to an independent review by research professionals, as directed by the Medical Advisory Committee;
- The Amputee Coalition of Canada’s Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) may elect to split the ten thousand dollar ($10,000) award amongst two or more recipients, or decide not to award in any given year depending on the submissions received.
Distribution of Funds
After the Medical Advisory Committee of the Amputee Coalition of Canada reviews and makes it final decision, all applicants will receive notification of the competition results. Awards will be transferred within three months of notification. The Franklin Fund, through the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry will administer the award with support from the Amputee Coalition of Canada.
Application Format
The research proposal should be five (5) pages in length or less (single-spaced, 12-font, 2-cm margins) with the following headings:
- Applicant Information
- Provide name, position and external affiliation (if applicable) of Principal Applicant and all Co-Applicants
- Study Title
- Total study cost and amount requested
- Abstract or summary of the research study
- Background
- Study Objectives
- Methods and Materials
- Budget
- Feasibility
- Clinical Relevance
- Dissemination of Results
A biographic sketch or current CV of the Principal Applicant should accompany the research proposal.

Acknowledgement
The Franklin Fund through the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Amputee Coalition of Canada must be acknowledged in all publications and presentations.
